I think credit here goes to LAJ's Tommy Magelssen, who was all over this story and I think he broke the interview as broke the fact that Kristy Curry interviewed at Alabama and now, she has accepted the head coaching position at Alabama. Here's Texas Tech Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt:
"Earlier this morning, I met with Coach Curry and she informed me that she would be resigning from Texas Tech in order to take the head coaching position at the University of Alabama," Hocutt’s statement read. "A national search for her replacement is underway and the immediate interest in the job has been tremendous.
"The Lady Raider Basketball program is steeped in history and tradition and its head coaching position is one of the top jobs in this country. We will work as expeditiously as possible with the goal to find the candidate that is the right fit for Texas Tech University and can lead our pursuit of championships and academic excellence."
And former head coach Marsha Sharp:
"I wish Kristy and Kelly (Curry) the best of luck at the University of Alabama," Sharp said in the statement. "I have every confidence that Kirby Hocutt will do an excellent job with this search and find someone who will do a terrific job. I look forward to following this program in the future and know there are many great times ahead for Lady Raider Basketball and our tremendous fans."
This is interesting in that all four major sports have had their head coaches replaced in the last year or so, football, men's basketball, baseball and women's basketball. I also do think that the difference between Hocutt and other coaches is that he wants you to prove it if you want that extension.
I don't follow the Lady Raiders as closely as I could, but if I had to guess, this next year is going to be a rough year for the team as only one starter returns and the other four guards that graduated played heavy minutes. I think that Curry and Texas Tech was headed for a near .500 record and Curry wasn't going to get an extension after that sort of season. This was really Curry's best option, where Alabama hasn't been in the NCAA since 1999. The expectations will be quite a bit different than at Texas Tech. I wish Curry luck.
The Lady Raider tennis team beat College of Charleston, 4-0, to advance and take on #15 Duke today at 1:00 pm. This was this program's first ever NCAA tournament win! The LAJ also recaps this historic win. Go Wreck 'Em!#
