Hunker Down and Settle Down

Like most of you it has taken me a few days after the TU mess to collect my thoughts. Here they are for what they are worth. I have shared that after the Leach fiasco I totally backed away from Tech. As I told Kent, not another hat, not another T shirt , not another donation and certainly not any tickets would come from this household. However, when Kliff was hired, Kent and I made nice and I was back all in. I walked away because I did not want to be one of the disgruntled snipers that fired away with negativity toward those that were still on board. And I am truly still all in but some of our reactions are driving me to distraction. Having had the wonderful opportunities to be around the locker rooms at over 30 major universities here are some real truths.

Most fans don't know enough about what really goes on inside any program to fill a small paper cup. Yet every week these boards are filled up with F%***% this coach and F%**% that player and F%%#* this or that. Whether you know it are not players play for (1) themselves (2) their teammates (3) their families (4) their schools and finally for THEIR FANS! Why so low for the fans? We should all look in the mirror because we are with em when they win and to hell with them when they lose or don't play good enough to suit us.

If I hear one more Tech fan say a game or performance was embarrassing I think I'm gonna puke. These athletes work their asses off seven days a week. Most go to class and put in more hours between the two activities than most of us would ever realize. And after every game they strip off that uniform and are sore from head to toe and have to reload and do it again.

Coaches work 10,15 or 18 hour days. They prepare, game plan, recruit AND have to put up with us continually second guessing every decision they make. I just wonder how there are so many geniuses in the world that know exactly why their best laid plans do or do not work. There must be a million football big brains in the world because I read everyday why a cover two, or special blizt package or offensive scheme did not work like the geniuses say . This is laughable that a FAN could ever have a clue about what will or will not work. Yet there we are on the posts shooting our mouths off because we know so damn much.

Here is the truth. The Texas Tech football program is incredibly devoid of talent at the moment. Our offensive and defensive lines are way too small and way too slow. Our receivers are way too slow. OK Grant has some hops but he should be a complimentary piece and not the focus of a passing game. I heard about great recruiting and bad on the field coaching after Leach left but the proof is in the pudding. The talent we have was garnered during that period until Kliff and the boys got here. I would say we are closer to SMU in talent as opposed to Texas and Okahoma. We scream that Baylor must be cheating to get the players they do. Here's a little secret for you. Art Briles is a Texas high school footballl coach. The coaches in Texas love the guy. Here's another secret for you. Kliff's dad was a 30 year Texas high school football coach. And Kliff is a product of Texas high school football coaching. This will pay more dividends down the road than you can imagine.

My request is this. Quit being a yo-yo fan sticking your chest out whenTech is 7-0 and cussing Tech out when they lose 5 in a row. Be consistent. Be all in. For the very first time I will be ordering football season tickets next year. For the first time in a long time I will contribute to the athletic and general scholarship fund. You may knock the Aggies but, by God, they put it all on the line for their support of the school. Over my 45 year love affair with Texas Tech I have found that we are one of the most apathetic fan bases I have ever witnessed. As my daddy used to say all hat and no cattle. Big talkers but little doers. I hope you will join me on going all in. Quit acting like a bunch of drunk 20-30 year olds going off the deep end during rough times. Tough times don't last.......tough people do. Lets hunker down and get this thing done. Quit cussing these folksout. You don't know them or their families. You have no right to cuss a man. Fact is every coach is representing himself, his school and you the very best they know how. Thanks for reading. Now I hope I can get off this soap box without pulling something.
