LINKS
Before we get to links this morning, go check out ST04's FanPost and go vote for his local high school to get some grant money. Go vote and consider this one of your good deeds for the day. Let's do this.
- Volleyball | The volleyball team will host New Mexico for a non-conference game tonight at 6:00 pm.
- NCAA Woman of the Year | Go check out Ifeatu Okafor's acceptance speech. This wasn't available the other day when I posted, so here it is and I've embedded it below.
- Softball | The softball team has been in action to get ready for the season and won 20-1 over west Texas A&M.
- Cross Country | Kennedy Kithuka won his 4th straight Big 12 Runner of the Week. There may not be a more decorated athlete that has ever attended Texas Tech. You are watching history being made.
- Baseball | The baseball team has been partaking in the Red & Black series, so go check out the baseball page for updates.
- Soccer | The soccer team will be back in action this weekend, hosting Kansas on Friday night and West Virginia on Sunday.
- Men's Basketball | The Big 12 Media Day was held yesterday and this seems like it's just not covered at all by the local media. There was an article in the LAJ about the new checking rules, but that's it. You can read HC Tubby Smith's quotes from the day along with all of the other coaches at the Big 12 Media Day. I did find a LAJ article about PG Luke Adams talking about speaking to an elementary class about his struggles and triumphs as a deaf person. Dan and I are planning a huge preview of the team here sometime soon, so be watching out for that.
- Football
- Linebacker Switch | The LAJ has a bit about how Aaron Ross has been replaced by Zach Winbush at the Bandit linebacker spot. Sounds like Ross may have some classroom things to take care of. Here's Co-DC Mike Smith on Winbush:
"It’s still new to him," Smith said, "but every week he’s getting better. The thing I like about Zach is he has the will. He wants to learn. He wants to get better. He’s going to come to my office every day, ask questions. The more he understands it, the more he’s going to play."
- Play-Action | Also from the LAJ is an article about how Texas Tech is running more play-action (which I just love) and here's RB DeAndre Washington talking about why they decided to use play-action against West Virginia:
"The (West Virginia) defense is real aggressive," Washington said. "Once they read run, their corners — really, their whole secondary — came down hard. So we felt like with the play-action, doing some screens, doing some things to slow them down, would work. We were able to have some success with it."
- SAEN in Lubbock | For those of you who have been around for a long time, Tim Griffin, the SAEN's college football writer was the initial ESPN Big 12 blogger. Anyway, Griffin was in Lubbock for the press conference and maybe for the week and he has a couple of articles this morning, one on TE Jace Amaro's questionable wardrobe and Texas Tech trying to run on OU's 3-4 defense.
- Opponent Preview | Our friends over at Crimson and Cream Machine have an initial look at Texas Tech. Go check it out.
- Expected Wins and Stats | Football Outsiders has their S&P+ rankings and the numbers (there's no human element at all to this, it's all computers) still don't see Texas Tech as a top 20 team amazingly. And no, the numbers are not intentionally skewed against Texas Tech, they are what they are. Football Study Hall has their expected wins and it's just scary to think. I have to rub my eyes and make sure I'm reading the right thing.
- Fast Football | HC Kliff Kingsbury was on Fast Football, which is like some sort of CBS college football show. It's about 7 minutes worth of video.
- Linebacker Switch | The LAJ has a bit about how Aaron Ross has been replaced by Zach Winbush at the Bandit linebacker spot. Sounds like Ross may have some classroom things to take care of. Here's Co-DC Mike Smith on Winbush:
