Who I think we should play.
Last night I was watching a re-run of the Tech-UTEP game from back in 2006. I could not believe how juiced the El Paso Fans were for that game. It got me thinking, in light of this whole Longwhorn network debacle and playing New Mexico TX state and NW Lousiana State, we should reserve our 3 games non conf games for the following teams.
North Texas-Home and away.- Has anyone seen Apogee Field? Its pretty darn amazing. With the tons of Tech alums in DFW, the DFW potential recruits, and the apathetic student body @ North Texas, we could make this a defacto home game. Tech fans could easily fill the stadium up. Drive is only 300 miles from Lubbock. El Paso over 100 miles further. Gets you playing in an opposing stadium and the like. I see an upside to it.
SMU/UTEP-Home and Away- We should alternate these guys every two years or so. Both are about as far, but we would get a challenge from both teams. El Paso would want this game BAD, and SMU gets better every year under June Jones. We just could @ SMU one year then host UTEP the next and then flip it out. Sun Bowl would be full and of course the Raider Nation of Dallas would invade and fill up Ford Stadium. Watch this fall when TAMU plays there. It will be like Kyle Field North.
A&M- The Ags may not be able to land a date with the whorns until 2018, but I can guarantee you Hocutt and Tubs (or his successor) would so be for this, and face it, you wanna play the Aggies, and whether they will admit it or not, the Aggies wanna play Tech. Do a home one year and away the next year non conference game. I think this would be better as a second game rather than a third, it would really get the juices flowing for both fan bases. I have been a fan of both and believe you me, nothing feels better than beating a rival.
Biggest reason is that it gives Tech 12 games, you win all three games, your already halfway to a bowl because they all count. No more I-AA nonsense. I say play A&M every year. If they are a decent SEC team, which I think they will be, does nothing but good for Tech. A win raises your standing in the polls and a loss gets you motivated for the rest of the season, in theory.
