Sorry to the younger Red Raider who fans might not identify with this song, but it does date back to "my era" and I couldn't resist. Here's a fitting farewell song for the former football coach, with appropriate apologies to Kenny Rogers, whose original version of "Lucille" can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SDVkdcO8ts.
T-ville
In a bar in West Texas, in a district called depot,
On a barstool he took off his hat.
I thought I'd get closer,
So I walked on over,
I sat down and asked him his name.
When the drinks finally hit him,
He said,"I'm a-quittin',
I don't get this passin' game.
I'm tired of wind blowin'
And me never knowin'
Where all these Tech fans are at."
In the mirror I saw him,
And I closely watched him.
I thought how he looked out of place.
He came to the head coach
Who sat there beside me.
He had a strange look on his face.
His head was a-baldin',
He looked like a weasel,
A man who could cause me no dread.
Then he started shaking,
His poor heart was breaking,
He turned to the head coach and said,
"You picked a fine time to leave me, T-ville,
With a big bowl before us and a team in the field.
We've had some bad times,
Lived through some sad times,
But I thought we'd get over that hill.
You picked a fine time to leave me, T-ville."
After he left us, I told coach ‘bout Cincy.
I thought he'd made "C-hance" look small.
From the lights of Jones Stadium to the plane to Ohio
We drove without talking at all.
He had reputation from the SEC nation.
I doubted he'd come out my way.
But Lubbock did break him and no one would take him,
So we ignored the words C-hance did say:
"You picked a fine time to leave me, T-ville,
With a big bowl before us and a team in the field.
You promised a championship,
Not just a sinkin' ship.
We had a good-ol'-boys deal.
You picked a fine time to leave me, T-ville."
"You picked a fine time to leave me, T-ville
With a big bowl before us and a team in the field.
We've had some bad times,
Lived through some sad times,
But I thought we'd get over that hill.
You picked a fine time to leave me, T-ville."
