Tubby replaced the most popular and winningest coach in Red Raider history - a coach who had the unique ability of taking ordinary Division I players and getting the best out of them. Early-on in his tenure, I attempted to separate him from the madness of the Leach firing and positively support the new direction of the program (Yes, I drank the kool-aide).
Then in his first season, he took a wrecking ball to everything that had been built by Leach and eked out a third tier bowl appearance, promising improvements this year. Even though he committed to keeping the offense, he transitioned it to something today that has little identity. He brought expectations of building a SEC type defense and winning Championships. He chased off a bunch of players. And he lost a lot of games including the last four at home and the last five games overall to finish 5-7 this year breaking Tech's long streak of bowl appearances. Unfortunately, the defense gave up 66 points in two of those loses which tied the school record. He snapped a streak of 16 winning seasons while coming up with "imaginative" excuses for the poor performances. The disappointments can go on & on which I'm sure you can add to.
Then earlier this year our infamous administration gave him a one-year extension and increased his compensation. Now, I wonder if he is actually on the hot seat. And, if he is, how big a turnaround is needed next year to save his job? That new deal was supposed to keep him at TTU through '15, but he has already done so much damage that he has worn out his welcome while his stoic performance has morphed into nightmare territory.
There is less tolerance in other Division I programs this year and we deserve better! The question is how much better must we be next year for Tubby to hang on? Is the answer in W/L record, butts in the seats, OR???
