Game Day!!!! The light at the end of the tunnel is near and we're here. The game day thread will go up some time this afternoon, probably around 5:00 p.m., an hour before kickoff.
The Red Raiders are Ready: LAJ's Don Williams talks with the Captain Mike Leach, who says that his team is ready:
"I think we’ll do well,’’ Leach said at midweek. "The players work together well, and overall we’ve had really good practices, probably our most productive (preseason) camp. So I’m looking forward to getting started.’’
And star power is over-rated:
To say the least, the star power is down from last year, an observation that makes Leach scoff.
"Star power is overrated,’’ he said. "Star power’s artificial anyway. That’s just somebody that’s around long enough to get written about. There’s plenty of bad players around the country regarded as stars. It’s just, they’ve been around for a while.’’
Potts Disappointed at Not Being Able to Harvest Doves on Regular Basis: LAJ's Don Williams talks with QB Taylor Potts, who is ready to take aim on opponents and still ready and willing to harvest dove and wild hog:
Potts said he’d been hunting deer all week and had come up empty. He was headed back to Lubbock the next day, and set out on a late-afternoon hunt. As darkness started to fall, he spotted a wild pig worth taking.
"I didn’t think he was very big at all,’’ Potts said. "I just shot him to get some meat and whatnot; went up there and it turned out to be a 350-pound hog. He had blades. It was real cool.’’
Lewis Ready for Primetime: FWST's Dwain Price writes about IR Detron Lewis being ready to be his own receiver and step out of the Crabtree-shadow but did pick up some pointers from Crabtree:
"I learned a lot of things from him, but the most important one is to separate myself from a lot of other receivers in the country," said Lewis, a 6-foot, 205-pounder. "Just come out and work hard each and every day, and that way I can separate myself.
"Just running routes, catching balls and just work hard each and every day. That’s why he won the Biletnikoff Award two years straight, because that’s what he came out and did each and every day."
Texas Tech Football Notebook: LAJ's Don Williams notes that P Donnie Carona has won the job, but will not hesitate to put in freshman walk-on Ryan Erxleben if things don't go well . . . 6,000 tickets remain for the game . . .
Tale of the Tape: The LAJ's Tale of the Tape slightly favors the Red Raiders.
Big 12 Links: Big 12 Sports with a preview of this week's game (someone should tell Wendell Barnhouse to read DTN, where he'll learn that Josh Murray is no longer with the North Dakota Fighting Sioux) . . . DMN's Chuck Carlton looks at the Big 12 games . . .
